Brazilian
by nationality and name
This artist from Pernambuco started out by modelling with
soapstone but it was his sculptures in coconut that made his
name and which have become famous in Tibau do Sul where he
lived and works.
From dried coconut palms, and most other parts of this highly
useful tree, the round, hard shells of the fruit of another
local tree (the cabaça) and newspaper appear in vibrant
colours the forms of fish, turtles, dolphins, chickens, cats
and even hot air balloons!.
Making use of materials quite often relegated to the rubbish
bin by most people, Severino and his sister Estael, helped
by locals and foreigners doing work experience, produce objects
of art which end up all over Brazil and the world as mementos
of the good times spent here.
