DAY
1: Depart: Tibau
Walk along the following beaches: do Giz, Praia do Madeiro*, Praia do
Village*, Praia do Curral* and Pipa beach.
(* these beaches together form what is known as Dolphin Bay)
First
stage: Tibau beach, do Giz, Cacimbinhas & Madeiro
Distance – 3km (starting off from the beach at Tibau.
Time – 45minutes (on foot)
Type of walk – easy
Start off from Tibau beach, an almost deserted stretch, and walk south
away from the village. When you see the first beach bars you will have
arrived at Cacimbinhas beach, popular with surfers. Along the next stretch,
as far as Madeiros, the blue of the sea contrasts sharply with the multi
coloured cliffs, the dunes and the coconut palms. From Madeiros onwards
keep an eye out for dolphins in the sea. Stop for a rest at Village
beach where the bar sells drinks and snacks and watch the surfers and
do a bit of people watching - this is a popular beach with visitors
.
2nd
stage: Ponta do Madeiro, Praia do Curral & Praia da Pipa
Distance: 2 km (to the centre of Pipa
How long: 40 minutes
Type of walk: fairly easy (there are some rocks to negotiate)
Now
that you’re rested you’re ready for the next part of the
walk which requires a little more energy and care. To get to praia do
Curral , just after the Nature Sanctuary you will come across a rocky
section of the beach (so be sure you walk this part at low tide). The
extra effort is well worth it for the next beach is semi-deserted and
dolphins are frequent visitors. They’re used to people and will
swim quite close; an unforgettable experience. At the other end of the
beach you’ll see some wooden posts sticking out of the sea. They
are the ruins of an old curral (a fishing trap dating back to Imperial
days when fishing was a more natural process, without nets & hooks,
simply making use of the coming & going of the tides) from whence
the beach takes its name. Walking on Atlantic forest is visible partially
covering the immense cliffs. From here in less than 15 minutes you’ll
be in the centre of Pipa.
Second day: Pipa, Chapadão, praia das Minas & Sibauma
1st stage: Chapadão
Distance: 2km from the centre of Pipa
How long – 20 minutes walk from Calangos Disco.
Type of walk: easy
Start the day well; have a good breakfast and visit Chapadão
– the headland that overlooks Pipa which offers one of the most
beautiful sights in the area – a 180° panoramic view (from
Pedra do Moleque & the love beach to Minas beach & all the way
to Sibauma). The way up is a 2km dirt track that can be walked or driven
up by bike or car.
2nd
stage: Praia das Minas & Sibauma
Distance: 4km from Chapadão
How long: 50 minutes on foot or 15 minutes by car.
Type of walk – moderately easy
Now that you’ve enjoyed a beautiful visit to Chapadão take
a breather and then walk along praia da Mina. It’s protected by
Projeto TAMAR (for marine turtles hatch their eggs here) and the only
beach in the area without cliffs. In time you’ll come to Sibauma,
a typical fishing village and old slave quilomba settlement of runaway
slaves). If you’re doing this stage by car you’ will be
limited to the dirt track that runs parallel to the beach as driving
along the beach is not permitted (to protect the turtles nests). On
your way back we suggest stopping off at Yahoo bar (part of Yahoo pousada)
on the Praia das Minas road for some fish. |
