The last Sunday in November

In contrast to other places in Brazil that celebrate Our Lady, Protector of Sailors day on the 2nd February, here in Pipa the celebrations for the saint of sailors and fishermen, also known as Yemanja, are on the last Sunday in November. On this day, at high tide, decorated boats go out to sea in procession with the statue of the saint to honour her.

Once out to sea prayers and offerings are offered to the patron saint of sailors in thanks for her protection. Devotees pray that the queen of the sea will continue to act as a guiding star for boats and their captains, crew and passengers. This demonstration of faith, for believers, guarantees not only protection but good fishing throughout the coming year.
