If even today the Christmas spirit inspires feelings of brotherhood and
compassion in the hearts of big-city dwellers, just imagine what
kindnesses such feelings can foster in a paradisiacal setting, one
where everyone knows each other...
In ’97 the idea of offering Pipa’s needy children a present from the Old
Man was enough to bring six women together from the community in order
to fulfil some Christmas dreams. With much impetus and dedication, this
group of volunteers starts yearly in June to prepare such activities as
meals, auctions, and parties, and they make the rounds of every
business in town to ask for donations for the children’s Christmas
presents.
And the lesson from this effort is one the children here have learned:
solidarity is a strong arm, which at Christmastime is transformed into
a present received from Father Christmas’ own hand. And with a
fantastic party too, complete with live music, cake, hot dogs and
sodas!
