Marine
Turtles
This
year alone Projeto Tamar (a national scheme for the
protection of marine turtles) found 150 turtle nests
along our beaches. These were monitored until the
young turtles hatched. Considering that an adult turtle
lays an average of 120 eggs, between the years 2001
and 2003 more than 40,000 baby turtles ran across
the beaches of Pipa to the sea.
Although this might sound like a lot of turtles the
environment is very hostile towards them. Even after
150 million years of existence they are easily caught.
In fact only one or two out of every thousand survive
to reach adulthood (when they can live up to 70 or
100 years)..
